  • How Volunteering Changes Lives – ChristianityToday.com

Have you ever noticed that when everything seems to be going along smoothly … the children are all well, the bills are caught up, there is money in the bank, things are going well on the job … how easy it is to slack off in your prayer time and Bible study? Over a period, a spirit of complacency may set in, and you may then become an easy target for Satan.

Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.

Proverbs 4:23

After you have experienced a spiritual breakthrough in your life, it may seem for a while as if you are so caught up in the Spirit that you are barely aware of what is happening around you. At this point, a sense of spiritual pride may take you over, and you may become overly confident. You may see others struggling or falling back into sin and think that it could never happen to you. You may think that your faith is too strong … or that you are personally too strong to fall into Satan’s trap. If you find yourself in this position of being overly confident in your spiritual strength, watch out! You will then be in a perfect position for Satan to catch you off guard.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: Whom resist steadfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you.

I Peter 5:8-10

On other occasions, Satan catches Christians off guard when they have become over involved. This often happens to people who are busy in the work of the Lord. They over extend themselves and soon find themselves physically, spiritually, emotionally, and mentally drained … “burned out.”

They are in the choir, teach a Sunday school class, and are involved in various other outreaches of their church, in addition to all of their other responsibilities at home and on the job. Because they are so involved in the work of the Lord, it is hard for them to see the dangerous position that they are in.

For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds); Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; And having in a readiness to revenge all disobedience, when your obedience is fulfilled.

II Corinthians 10:3-6

Now … don’t misunderstand me. Your ministry for the Lord is very important. The danger enters when those activities … no matter how good they are … crowd out or replace your time of personal communion with God. Now is the time for ultimate prayer, worship, and praise.

Say this faith declaration out loud:

When I advance in battle accompanied by the Presence of the God, no enemy can stand against me! Their hearts will melt, their courage will fail, and their strategies will be defeated. I will remain vigilant and obedient to the Lord and His ways.
