  • Most people would agree that wisdom, knowledge, and understanding help us all to succeed in life.

Beloved, fear of the Lord gives us those things – which bring health and prosperity and every good thing.

My son, if thou wilt receive my words, and hide my commandments with thee; So that thou incline thine ear unto wisdom, and apply thine heart to understanding; Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the Lord, and find the knowledge of God.

Proverbs 2:1-5

You may be wondering, “What exactly does it mean to “fear” the Lord?” Here is the answer:

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.

Proverbs 8:13

Beloved, if you have not been a partaker in all of the blessings of God, take a look at the below Scriptures. They will help give meaning to terms that perhaps you have not fully understood.

Having wisdom (fear of the Lord) means to hate evil, and understanding comes when we refuse to participate in evil:

And unto man he said, Behold, the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding.

Job 28:28

Wisdom and understanding bring prosperity:

Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding. … Length of days is in her right hand; and in her left hand riches and honour.

Proverbs 3:13, 16

The word riches in the above verse is the Hebrew word ‘osher, which literally means to have financial provision. The word honour is the Hebrew word kabowd, which means “abundance, riches, dignity.”

The fear of the Lord (to hate evil) brings confidence (hope, security, and trust), and a long life:

In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge. The fear of the Lord is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death.

Proverbs 14:26-27

Beloved, fear of the Lord will keep you from evil, give you honor and dignity, build your confidence, and provide you with financial blessings and long life. Wow! It doesn’t get any better than that. So, if you will endeavor to hate evil and refrain from it, … all these blessings shall come on thee, and overtake thee (Deuteronomy 28:2).

Say this faith declaration out loud: Lord, You are so good to me. I will seek to honor You in everything I do. I will hate all evil and refrain from it. Thank You for showering me with all of Your glorious blessings.

Scripture Reading:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom: a good understanding have all they that do his commandments: his praise endureth for ever.

Psalm 111:10

The fear of the Lord prolongeth days: but the years of the wicked shall be shortened.

Proverbs 10:27

Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the Lord all the day long.

Proverbs 23:17

These six things doth the Lord hate: yea, seven are an abomination unto him: A proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, An heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, A false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among brethren.

Proverbs 6:16-19
