Sin is running rampant around the world. The devil is using fear and confusion to convince people to do ungodly things that hurt not only themselves, but others as well. Now is the time for God’s people to blow the trumpet and sanctify a fast.
God spoke through the prophet Joel:
Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children … Let the priests, the ministers of the Lord, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O Lord, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God?
Joel 2:15-17
By His Spirit, God is sounding an alarm! He is looking for men and women—like Moses, Daniel, Ezra, and Esther—who will fast, weep, mourn, and stand in the gap for their home, city, and nation. He is looking for those who will … sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof (Ezekiel 9:4).
The word sanctify, as used in Joel 2:15, means “to set apart for God.” God is calling us to first set aside time to humble ourselves before Him in fasting and repenting of our sins. Then, He will bring us to a place where the Holy Spirit will move upon us to pray for the sins of the Church, our community, and nation.
As we begin to fast and pray, we must yield ourselves to the Holy Spirit, and allow Him to pray divinely energized prayers through us that will be used by God to destroy Satan’s strongholds and set the captives free!
Christ has given us the key to living in a spiritual dimension, whereby we are operating in the same power and authority that He had, to do the same works that He did! Jesus said:
… If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind goeth not out but by prayer and fasting.
Matthew 17:20-21
Jesus said that the key to releasing the power of God, where nothing is impossible to us, is through fasting and prayer. The power that the Church needs today—to tear down Satan’s strongholds, loose the bonds of sin, heal the sick, and set the captives free—can only be received on our knees, before God through fasting and prayer.
All of the great revivals that we have experienced started when Christians joined together in fasting and prayer. God is ready to release an unprecedented manifestation of His power in this end-time hour. He is waiting for those who are ready and willing to lay down their lives in fasting and prayer.
God promised Joel:
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions: And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.
Joel 2:28-29
The key word in verse 28 is afterward! Throughout chapters one and two of the Book of Joel, God was calling His people to fast and pray: Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God … (Joel 1:13).
AFTER God’s people fast and pray—after we have wept—after we have called a solemn assembly, then:
- God will … be jealous for his land, and pity his people (Joel 2:18).
- The heavens will open up, and God will pour out His Spirit upon all flesh (Joel 2:28).
- Restoration and abundance will come, and God’s people will be satisfied (Joel 2:24-27).
The outpouring will be so strong that entire cities will be transformed. Multitudes will be saved, healed, and delivered. This great outpouring will be a final witness to the world of God’s power and glory before Christ returns.
You can be the one whom God will use to spare your city and nation.
Say this faith declaration out loud: I come before you, Lord, with a humble and repentant heart, asking that you forgive my family, my community, and my nation for the sins that we have committed against You. Use me, Lord, to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, to set the oppressed free, and to break every yoke of bondage. I will wait before You in fasting and prayer until Your power is released and our cities and nations are transformed.
Scripture Reading:
Peradventure there be fifty righteous within the city: wilt thou also destroy and not spare the place for the fifty righteous that are therein? That be far from thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked: and that the righteous should be as the wicked, that be far from thee: Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Genesis 18:24-25
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
II Peter 3:9
I have set watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerusalem, which shall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the Lord, keep not silence, And give him no rest, till he establish, and till he make Jerusalem a praise in the earth.
Isaiah 62:6-7
