The late, great Billy Graham said “God’s mercy and grace give me hope – for myself, and for our world.” Without God’s grace, we are lost. But, grace can be interpreted on many levels and is multi-faceted. So how does grace work? Today, we will examine four ways grace works, and look at what that means for our relationship with Christ.
Beloved, the word translated “grace” in the New Testament comes from the Greek word charis, which means “favor, blessing, or kindness.” And, in Titus 2:11, we see that grace is an undeserved gift that brings us salvation.
With our salvation, as we pray and study the Word, we find that grace is prominent in both the Old and New Testaments, and, is the least deserved gift that God bestows upon us.
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.
Ephesians 2:8—9
Grace is the unmerited favor of God that we have received through Christ. God gives us grace so that we can better serve and glorify Him. Here are four ways that the grace of God works in our lives:
- Grace Produces Righteousness—
In Romans 5:8, we learn that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. This is the highest expression of grace and mercy. We do not deserve redemption, but God, in His loving grace, has redeemed us from sin and death. God sees us as righteous because we are the righteousness of God in Him (II Corinthians 5:21). - Grace Leads Us to Servitude—
There is a saying: “Grace is when God gives us what we don’t deserve, and mercy is when God doesn’t give us what we do deserve.” In James 4:6, it says that God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble. As we humble ourselves before God, our bond with Him grows, and our desire to serve Him is the natural result. - Grace Emboldens Us to Sacrifice—
When Paul wrote to the church in II Corinthians 9:7—8, God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you, he addressed their lack of giving, and repeatedly appealed to them to factor grace into the equation. He reminded them of the other areas where God’s grace had touched their lives, and he told them that God’s grace could enable them to give cheerfully. - Grace Gives Us Strength—
The Bible tells us in II Timothy 2:1, Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. There are so many obstacles that we face in this world. But we must always remember, we are not of this world! Grace reminds us of the hope we have in Jesus, and as we focus on Him, we can rejoice that our strength is in Him.
Beloved, grace is the freely given and undeserving support that God gives us so that we might respond to His call to share a relationship with Him and receive salvation. God’s grace does not take away from, or restrict us. Instead, it helps us overcome sin, which is the true hindrance to our freedom.
Say this faith declaration out loud: Father God, thank You for Your never-ending grace. I know that I am unworthy and undeserving and that You freely give it to me as a gift. As I recognize Your grace in my life, I will use it to produce righteousness, be a better servant for You, make bold sacrifices, and walk in Your strength. Amen.
