God wants you to have a fresh revelation of the breadth, length, height and depth of His love. Get ready to know it…receive it…experience it…and manifest it to the world as never before!
God is love. Love originates in Him and flows forth from Him. The very essence of His divine character is love. All of His actions are expressions of His nature to love. When He created the heavens and earth and placed man upon it, He did it in love. Today He saves, heals, rules, chastises, judges IN LOVE.
To know God is to know His love. John told the believers in the early Church: “Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love, does not know God, because God is love” (I John 4:7-8, NIV).
God’s love is not a natural life force. It is not something we can learn or acquire on our own. God’s supernatural, divine love is given to us by God. God’s love manifested in our lives is evidence that we know God…that we have been born of God…that His nature is in us…that we have entered into a relationship with Him where He is in us, and we are in Him. A failure to love as He loves is an indication that a person does not know God, and that he has not been born again.
God has clearly revealed the depth of the powerful, supernatural love He has for us and has placed within us; not with flowery words or empty promises, but by one single ACT of His divine love. To know what God’s love really is and to understand the type of love we are to manifest to one another, we must look at this one supreme act of God’s love.
The Apostle John wrote: “Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren” (I John 3:16). “This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another” (I John 4:9-11, NIV).
John said, “This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us.” We know what God’s love is by this one powerful demonstration of God’s love. God’s love for us was not based upon an emotional feeling. It was not mere profession or sentiment. It was not passive. God’s love for us required Him to ACT. It required a total denial of Himself. It required His willingness to sacrifice His most valuable, beloved possession. His love was so great that He GAVE…His love motivated Him to ACT.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). God did not hold back anything…He gave His very best! He did not sacrifice some remote, inanimate object, but gave part of Himself…His only begotten, dearly beloved Son…so that we who were dead (cut off from God by our sins) might be able to LIVE through Him.
“But God! So rich is He in His mercy! Because of and in order to satisfy the great and wonderful and intense love with which He loved us, even when we were dead (slain) by (our own) shortcomings and trespasses, He made us alive together in fellowship and in union with Christ. He gave us the very life of Christ Himself, the same new life with which He quickened Him…” (Ephesians 2:4-5, TAB)
GOD’S LOVE REQUIRED HIM TO SACRIFICE HIS MOST BELOVED POSSESSION
Christ was the object of God’s divine love. He was with God from the beginning (John 1:1-2). God loved Him with an infinite, divine love before the foundation of the world (John 17:24). He and the Father were ONE. All that God had He freely bestowed upon His Son. He poured out His love upon Him, and His love was in Him.
Christ lived and remained in God’s love (John 15:10). While He was upon the earth God audibly spoke proclaiming His love for Christ. Once after His baptism in the Jordan and later when He was transfigured, God declared, “This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased” (Matthew 3:17; 17:5).
God’s love for us was so great that He was willing to send His only Son into the world to die an agonizing death, in shame and disgrace, KNOWING that man would reject His love, sin against Him and reject His Son. Christ was the Lamb of God slain from the foundation of the world (Revelation 13:8).
Even before He created us, He loved us with an unselfish, self-sacrificing, everlasting love. Flowing forth from His very Being…His divine nature of love…came a desire to have a family that would love, obey and worship Him. He didn’t want created beings who would automatically love and serve Him, like robots or puppets on a string. He desired a relationship with beings upon whom He could pour out His love and who would, in turn, pour out their love upon Him. He desired SONS.
Before He created the universe, the heavens and earth, and placed Adam and Eve in the garden of Eden, God knew they would use their wills to disobey Him. He knew the depths of sin and corruption that would cover the earth. Yet, He still loved us.
Knowing that man would reject Him and His love, God devised a plan whereby He would pay the ultimate price to redeem man from sin, and restore — man into fellowship with Him.
2 Samuel 14:14 declares, “But God does not sweep life away, instead HE DEVISES WAYS TO BRING US BACK WHEN WE HAVE BEEN SEPARATED FROM HIM!”
Knowing that man would reject Him and His love, He planned to send His Son to suffer and die that man would be forever set free from the power of sin, and would be able to live his life through Him.
Knowing that man would reject Him and His love, He planned for man to enter into a covenant relationship with Him where Christ would live within him…where they would be united together as ONE…where He would be able to bestow upon him His glory (all that He has and is).
Knowing that man would reject Him and His love, He planned to place His own divine nature within man and, by His Spirit, conform and transform him into the exact image of His own Son.
GOD’S LOVE WITHIN US CREATES AN OVERFLOW OF HIS SELF-SACRIFICING LOVE FOR OTHERS!
The Apostle John was overwhelmed by this great demonstration of love. He exclaimed, “Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God” (I John 3:1).
God’s love for you is ACTIVE. God’s tender affection for you is unmistakable and vibrant, not merely passive.
It is not based upon an emotion but upon a DELIBERATE ACT OF HIS DIVINE WILL…a predetermined choice! He demonstrated and clearly proved His love for us by sacrificing His most valuable, beloved possession that we might become His own beloved children possessing His own nature.
Paul told the Christians in Rome, “But God shows and clearly proves His (own) love for us by the fact that while we were still sinners Christ, the Messiah, the Anointed One, died for us” (Romans 5:8, TAB). God PROVED His love for us through His actions.
This one supreme act of love clearly distinguishes between God’s “agape” love and man’s natural “phileo” love. God has placed this same powerful, supernatural love within us! It is not passive but ACTIVE. Just as God’s love for us required action, God’s love in us requires ACTION. It cannot remain passive. It requires a demonstration of the same self-sacrificing love.
God’s love in us requires that we deny ourselves…totally give up our own lives…and give ourselves unreservedly to God in a life of loving obedience. It requires that we no longer live our lives to please ourselves, but that we lay down our own lives for the sake of others.
God’s love for us was more than just empty words or theology, it was a visible demonstration. God’s love within us must not be an abstract theory, it must be a demonstration…visible, concrete acts…whereby we prove our love in meeting the needs of others. Just as God’s love flowed forth from Him and was demonstrated to us, He has planned for His love within us to flow forth from us in a demonstration to the world.
Our love must not be based upon an emotion or feeling, we must demonstrate God’s love to others through a deliberate act of our wills.
God’s love within us must not be manifested only to those who we feel are deserving of our love, or who will reciprocate our love. We must allow God’s love to flow through us to the alcoholic, the prostitute, the lonely and destitute, as well as our family, friends and neighbors.
GOD DEMONSTRATED HIS LOVE FOR US IN CREATION
God demonstrated His great love for man in creation. His love was ACTIVE. He created the heavens and earth; formed the seas; filled the earth with trees and herb-yielding seed; created the fish, the birds and all the animals. He planted a beautiful garden filled with every kind of fruit-bearing tree, and also the tree of life and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.
Then, from the dust of the earth God formed man and breathed His very life into him. He made man in His own image. He gave Adam the power of a free will to choose to love and obey Him. He placed man in the garden of Eden and gave him power, authority and dominion over all the earth. He crowned man with glory and honor, set him over the works of His hands. He left nothing outside man’s control (Hebrews 2:7-8).
Like a loving father caring for his children, God demonstrated His love by providing for the needs of His children. He gave Adam and Eve everything they needed. There was no sin, sickness, pain or death.
Adam and Eve lived in God’s love. They were His dearly beloved children and He was their Father. He withheld nothing from them. He was not an impersonal Being far removed from them. He fellowshipped…came down and walked and talked…with them.
God’s love for us is everlasting…eternal. Even after Adam and Eve used the power of their free will against God…to reject and disobey Him.. God’s love endured.
God did not bring suffering, pain, turmoil, sickness and death into the world to punish man. He had planned for man to live in perfect communion and fellowship with Him forever. He never intended for man to suffer want…to know pain, sickness or death.
Man broke his relationship with God and through his sin brought suffering, pain, sickness and death. God did not punish man. Man brought about his own punishment. Because of his sin, man was severed from God and there was a wall of enmity separating man from God. God’s love endured. He did not destroy man but set in motion His foreordained plan to destroy the power of sin, sickness and death, and restore man into fellowship with Him.
God looked upon the earth that was polluted and corrupted by sin and His heart was filled with pain. He was sorry and repented that He had made man and placed him upon the earth.
“The earth was depraved and putrid in God’s sight, and the land was filled with violence (desecration, infringement, outrage, assault, and lust for power). And God looked upon the world and saw how degenerate, debased and vicious it was; for all humanity had corrupted their way upon the earth and lost their true direction.” (Genesis 6:11-12, TAB)
“And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved at heart. So the Lord said, I will destroy, blot out and wipe away mankind whom I have created from the face of the ground; not only man, (but) the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air, for it grieves and makes Me regretful that I have made them.” (Genesis 6:6-7, TAB)
It grieved God to see man living in this lost, corrupt condition. Yet, He did not destroy man, God’s love endured. He saved a remnant of people, Noah and his descendants, and entered into an everlasting covenant with them (Genesis 9:8-17).
